Moving Costs Explained: What Your Quote Should Cover
Updated 3 October 2026 · DZ Cargo moving guide
Two homes with the same number of bedrooms can need very different moving arrangements. One may have a few cartons and lightweight furniture; another may include large wardrobes, delicate items and a difficult staircase. An accurate moving quote starts with the belongings and the work, rather than a house-size label alone.
The items and the space they need
Share a complete inventory, including items stored outside the main rooms. Dimensions or photographs help with bulky furniture. A change in the volume can affect packing material, handling and the vehicle arrangement, so update the team before moving day.
Pickup, destination and the journey
Provide the actual addresses when you have them. Local and intercity moves involve different transport plans, and the final delivery point matters as much as the city name. If the destination property is not ready, discuss storage and a later delivery as separate parts of the plan.
Packing and preparation
Different items need different protection. Discuss fragile goods, artwork, large appliances and furniture requiring dismantling. If you will pack some cartons yourself, specify which ones. Compare material and labour inclusions across quotations instead of assuming every packing service has the same scope.
Access at both properties
Tell the mover about floors, stairs, lift dimensions, the distance from the loading point and any restrictions on vehicle entry. These affect the work needed to carry goods. Confirm access arrangements with the property manager before the date is finalised.
The help you want after arrival
Unloading, unpacking and reassembly are different tasks. Decide whether you need cartons placed in rooms, goods unpacked or furniture reassembled, then include that work in the quotation. Electrical or other specialist installation should be discussed separately with the appropriate professional.
Check the complete amount
Ask for a written breakdown and confirm applicable taxes, insurance, storage or extra handling charges. Check payment stages and how a change in scope will be priced. A clearly recorded total is easier to compare than several verbal estimates.
Compare like for like
Send the same item list and access details to each mover. Put packing, transport, handling, delivery support, insurance and any exclusions side by side. A cheaper quote can be suitable, but first understand which work it covers and which work you would need to arrange yourself.
Prepare for a useful quotation
Before contacting us, have the item list, both addresses, preferred date and service requirements ready. Our home shifting, office moving and vehicle transport pages explain the different arrangements. Any indicative range is a planning guide; your written quote should describe your actual move.
