How to Plan Storage Between Two Homes
Updated 3 October 2026 · DZ Cargo moving guide
Storage can bridge the gap when you must leave one property before the next is ready. The useful questions are practical: which goods are going in, when will you need them, and what access will you have in between? Decide those points before the cartons are sealed.
Separate storage goods from everyday essentials
Keep the documents, clothes, medicines and equipment you will use during the gap with you. If you may need certain cartons earlier than the rest, identify them in advance and ask whether partial retrieval is available under the proposed arrangement.
Create an inventory you can use later
List furniture, appliances and carton numbers with clear descriptions. Photograph visible condition before packing. Keep your copy of the list accessible rather than placing it inside a stored carton, and record any later addition or removal.
Discuss preparation for the storage period
Tell the team what is being stored and for how long. Ask about suitable packing, protective wrapping and preparation of furniture or appliances. Keep goods clean and dry before packing, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for appliances that need preparation.
Check what the facility can accept
Ask about restrictions before sending goods. Do not assume the arrangement accepts food, liquids, flammable products, batteries, plants or other items needing special conditions. Describe anything unusual so the storage provider can confirm whether it is suitable.
Understand access and handling
Confirm how retrieval is requested, what notice is needed and whether access or handling carries a charge. Ask about security, the storage arrangement and any environmental requirements for your belongings. Specialist conditions should be confirmed explicitly, not inferred from a general storage description.
Review the charges and insurance
Check the charging period, collection, packing, loading, retrieval and delivery costs. Ask what happens if you need to extend the duration. Discuss insurance for both the journeys and the time in storage, then read the applicable documents and exclusions.
Plan redelivery before you need it
Once the property is ready, share the receiving address, floor, access and preferred date. Confirm the item list for redelivery and the unloading or unpacking you need. Keep your inventory available to check the consignment when it arrives.
Connect storage with the rest of your move
Explore DZ Cargo’s warehouse and household storage services and explain the likely gap between properties. If your dates are uncertain, say so at the quotation stage. A plan that allows for an extension is more useful than an assumed delivery date.
